In 2019 I left on a self-funded tour and workshop series with my trombone for 9 months in India. As part of this I spent a month in Mumbai, collaborating with other jazz musicians and performing at venues across the city including the Royal Bombay Yacht Club.
I spent much time in Rajasthan. Initially this was spent meeting and playing with folk musicians including Kasam Khan Langa and Mir Basu Khan. This time was spent understanding the folk music tradition in Rajasthan travelling between Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer.
Later on in the year, I took part in the Rajasthan Kabir Yatra, week long travelling folk festival dedicated to the poetry of Sufi saint Kabir, playing openly in satsangs every morning. This was the seed to discovering my voice and an intimate connectivity that was unveiled for me playing the instrument in this environment.
I spent a month living in Jaisalmer and learning the algoza and circular breathing from Mohan Lal Lohar, a local instrument and flute creator and performer.
One of the musicians and composers I met and played with on the Kabir Yatra was Vedanth Bharadwaj. We kept in touch and since leaving India (and the Covid-19 pandemic taking hold), Vedanth ran online Sing A Lullaby workshops with fellow musician Gurupriya Athreya which I have been taking part in weekly.
I led a workshop mid-year teaching a French lullaby, and am playing on the recording project which is taking part alongside the workshops. The first single release Amna Bibi has been produced by Khatija Rahman and can be pre-saved here.
